Air Traffic Control is a pop/rock band hailing from Nova Scotia's South Shore. Band members include Kirk Comstock (lead vocals/guitar), Jordi Comstock (drums/vocals) & Luke Comstock (bass). The band has a history that predates even its current name. Brothers Kirk and Jordi Comstock made their first foray into music while in elementary school. By 1991, both were playing shows in and around their hometown of Lunenburg.
Originally founded under the Madhat moniker, they recruited a bassist and released the independent EP Freak in 1993. This received the attention of local radio station CKBW who would feature the trio prominently through local programming bringing Madhat to a wider audience.
In 2005, Madhat renamed themselves Air Traffic Control. They released a new self-titled album on February 12, 2005 to critical acclaim and garnering a nomination for New Group of the Year at the Nova Scotia Music Week conference. The trio's opening track, 'Feel Proud' was selected as the title song for the Electronic Arts game Rugby 2005 and has been featured in the YTV series 15 Love.
Already nominated for Alternative Album of the Year by the East Coast Music Association and Music Nova Scotia for their 2005 self-titled debut, Air Traffic Control releases its finest effort to date, To Be Free.
From front to back, To Be Free is the kind of albums great bands make - the kind that's listenable from beginning to end. It has dynamic, organic guitars and heartfelt lyrics of life, love and loss… It was written by brothers Jordi and Kirk along with their cousin Luke and co-produced by acclaimed producer Laurence Currie - Sloan, Wintersleep, Gandharvas.
Already a known entity amongst industry insiders and music fans, and with tours of Canada on the horizon, there's no telling where To Be Free will take these secret stars from small-town Lunenburg, set to play packed audiences in cities everywhere. If you haven't heard of Air Traffic Control yet, now's the time to listen and come see them at this years "Big Ex" on Thursday, July 24th.
